Publish and submit an XML sitemap

A sitemap is a list of URLs you want search engines to know about.

Applies to live websites.

Before you start

Why it matters

It can help discovery, especially for new or large sites, but does not guarantee crawling or indexing.

Do it step by step

  1. 1

Check whether your CMS or framework already publishes /sitemap.xml.

  2. 2

Include canonical, public, indexable URLs and remove redirects, errors, and private URLs.

  3. 3

Add the sitemap URL to robots.txt if appropriate and submit it in Search Console.

  4. 4

Check the submitted status for errors.

Example

Include https://example.com/services/ but omit /login/ and an old redirected URL.

Check your work

The sitemap loads as valid XML and Search Console accepts the submitted URL.

Complete when

A current sitemap containing intended public URLs is live and submitted.

Inspect my existing website project before editing. Publish and submit an XML sitemap. Check whether your CMS or framework already publishes /sitemap.xml. Include canonical, public, indexable URLs and remove redirects, errors, and private URLs. Add the sitemap URL to robots.txt if appropriate and submit it in Search Console. Check the submitted status for errors. Keep the existing framework and design conventions. Verify the result with the project's checks and by inspecting the rendered page or response. Explain any manual account, hosting, or Search Console steps I must do myself.
